Buffalo Sabres hire Ruff as head coach
The Buffalo Sabres announced on Monday that they have hired Lindy Ruff, the fifth-winningest coach in NHL history, as the new head coach. Ruff, 64, returns to Buffalo after achieving 864 career regular-season wins with the Sabres, Dallas Stars, and New Jersey Devils. He holds the rank of fifth all-time and is second among active coaches. Ruff’s 935 combined wins in the regular season and playoffs are tied for fourth in league history.
He has a successful track record, having made the playoffs in each of his three stops as a head coach, including a 112-point finish with the Devils last season. Sabres general manager Kevyn Adams expressed his excitement, stating that Lindy’s experience, proven track record, and familiarity with young players made him the ideal candidate for the job. Adams also emphasized that the decision wasn’t influenced by nostalgia, but rather by Lindy’s suitability for the role. He believes that Lindy can help the team reach their goals and is eager to work with him.
Lindy Ruff expressed his gratitude to Terry, the Pegula family, and Kevyn Adams for the opportunity. He conveyed his commitment to helping the team succeed and emphasized the importance of unity and determination among the players. Ruff stated his dedication to ensuring that the players believe in each other and love being part of the Buffalo Sabres. He acknowledged the challenges ahead and expressed his excitement to get started on the work.
